Annapolis Royal, Wednesday, 7-Jun-2023

We took it easy on our first full day in Annapolis Royal. We wandered around Fort Anne, went on a hike to a spectacular waterfall, and relaxed for the rest of the day.

Even though where we're staying provides a continental breakfast, we decided to buy some things the day before to flesh out the meal. When we got to the breakfast room, there were more things than we anticipated, but it was still good to have our supplemental items.

Fort Anne

Once we were fed, we went downtown to walk through Fort Anne. We first went to the Officers' Quarters where the admissions desk is. We were able to use our National Parks pass for admission, and went through the museum. Among other things, there was a set of tapestries representing the fort, the city, and the national parks. There was also a small diorama with miniature figures representing life in the fort in 1710.

Having finished the museum, we started walking the grounds. After going to the end of the wharf, we went around the outside of the ditch surrounding the fort, seeing several monuments. The path led us past the cemetery, then we went inside to look at the powder magazine (where the black powder was kept) and the Black Hole, the original storage for black powder (but ended up being too damp).

Delap's Cove

We got back in the car and drove to Bohoker Trail, which follows the coast to Delap's Cove. The trail seemed pretty good as we started out, but once we started heading toward the Bay of Fundy, it started getting wet. Walking along the bay, some sections had an inch or two of water, and others had mud. The cliffs had a lot of variation, seeming to change every time we looked out. There was fog when we got to the bay, but it started lifting as we hiked further.

We reached Delap's Cove and started hearing the Delap's Cove waterfall. We got a peek of the falls, then as we started following the cove we got better views. We crossed over to the other side of the cove and were able to look down from the top of the falls. We proceeded out to the far end of the cove to look back at where we were hiking.

The trip back to the car was quick and the trail was mostly dry the rest of the way.

Rest of the day

We got back to Annapolis Royal and had lunch at a café which happened to be right next to where we parked. We then went a few doors down to get some ice cream. We chatted with the proprietor about hiking in the area, and she seemed to be quite avid.

Next stop was a grocery store to pick up things for dinner, then we went back to the room to spend the rest of the evening.
