Búðir to Reykjavík, 26 Aug 2026
We said goodbye to the group and hung out in Reykjavík, checking out the library, getting lunch at a place we were too early for last time, and otherwise having a relaxing day.
We had an early start to the day, leaving the hotel before they served breakfast, so the first person to fly out would have time at the airport. We drove through the Hvalfjörður Tunnel for 3.5 miles under Hvalfjörður (“whale fjord”). Soon after, we pulled into a bakery to get our breakfast.
Once we left the bakery, the next stop was Reykjavik. The vans pulled into a loading zone near Hallgrimskirkja Church and we got our bags. We were able to say goodbye all around, then walked the block and a half to check into our room.
Even though we were early, our room was ready, so it was nice to be able to get settled. We didn’t have a lot planned for the day, but did want to check out the library. We looked around a bit once we got there, seeing where you could check out small appliances (even a sewing machine), and another area where you could check out artwork.
We found a table to sit at for a bit with our computers, then checked out the stairwell where there were some photos on loan from the Reykjavik Museum of Photography. We decided on returning to a bakery for lunch where we were too early last time, so couldn’t order from the lunch menu. We weren’t sure how long the line was, so we aimed to get there 10 or 15 minutes before noon (when lunch service begins). As it ended up, our timing was good, and we were seated just a few minutes after noon. Lunch and dessert were both great.
Wanting to have a bit more computing time, we went to a café where we knew the internet was good and that we should be able to get a table. After spending time there, we got gelato before going to the grocery store to get breakfast items, then back to the room for a bit.
We did venture out one more time to get dinner, then to the bakery where we had lunch for dessert and scones for the morning. After that, it was back to the room to do some packing and get ready for an early rise.
