Chéticamp, Tuesday, 20-Jun-2023
For our last full day in Chéticamp and the last non-travel day of our trip, we did one more hike and watched the sunset from our room.
At the start of our trip, we bought food in larger quantities, taking into account we were traveling between cities and some places didn't have a microwave, a fridge, or both. As we reach the end of the trip, the game is to finish up our food on the last day. We cheated for part of it, buying day-to-day for some items. In our defense, we were getting things from a bakery, so we wanted our purchases to be fresh.
After breakfast, we went back to Cape Breton Highlands National Park and pulled into the parking lot of the visitor centre, since our hike would begin there.
Acadian Trail
The Acadian Trail is similar to the Skyline Trail from the previous day but is a bit longer and has more elevation gain. It's a loop, which begins along a small river, Ruisseau des Habitations Neuves. It may be small, but it kept up with the trail which gained elevation quickly. That means there were a lot of little waterfalls, which gave me plenty of opportunities to take pictures. We crossed several bridges, which created even more photo opportunities.
When we finally moved away from the river, we climbed a bit more and then were treated to views of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Chéticamp. While the main viewpoint was good, we went to the next one which had a better view of Chéticamp to the south, even though the north was no longer available. It was a perfect place to have lunch.
We continued down and continued to see good views of the city and gulf. We even were able to make out the Enragée Point Lighthouse in the fog. Finally, we were back at the parking lot.
Rest of the day
While the drive back to the motel is less than 15 minutes, we stopped once again at the bakery to pick up some Acadian meat pies for dinner, rolls for part of breakfast, and cookies for a snack. We also stopped by the grocery store to flesh out the rest of dinner.
We relaxed for the rest of the afternoon, then ate. Then later in the evening, we saw the sunset right outside our window.
